Frosinone

Frosinone, also known as Frusino in antiquity, is a fascinating city with roots in the Volscian era. This town, once a Roman municipium, has passed through the shades of time under medieval ecclesiastical influence. Once the capital of "Campagna e Marittima," Frosinone became a provincial capital in 1926 and later a prefectural seat.

The rise of Frosinone began in the 1960s, when the agricultural and commercial economy gave way to vigorous industrial development, marked by major factories along the main thoroughfares. The historic heart of the city winds up the hillside, with the majestic Prefecture Palace dominating the horizon. Archaeological finds of great interest are housed in the municipal museum, while the remains of an ancient Roman amphitheater rest at the foot of the hill.

And because of these millennia-old roots, we can link the carnival festival of the "Radeca" (agave leaf, symbol of fertility) to ancient Roman saturnalia and fertility rituals. Over the years, the festival has taken on new meanings, becoming an expression of the struggle for freedom, personified in the French general Championnet, who is depicted as the king of Carnival and then burned in effigy.

Among the most significant monuments is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, dating from the 11th century and rebuilt over time. A square bell tower of Romanesque origin stands near the church. Other places of worship such as the Church of St. Benedict, the Church of St. Magnus or Our Lady of Deliberation, and the neo-classical Church of St. Lucy tell the story of the different stages of the city's architectural evolution.

The city also offers a captivating variety of cultural and historical sites to explore, including the Provincial and Municipal Library, the Monument to the Heroes of the Italian Risorgimento, and the archaeological excavations of Ancient Frusino with the remains of a Roman amphitheater.

Frosinone is more than just a destination; it is a stop on the fascinating journey through the history, art, and culture of central Italy. Be captivated by its thousand-year legacy and discover the hidden wonders of this enchanting city.
